Finishing a basement in Mecklenburg County: permits, moisture and egress
The three things to get right before you choose flooring or paint colors.

Start with moisture
Charlotte's red clay holds water, and many basements here see some dampness. Before we finish anything we check grading, gutters and downspouts, look for efflorescence, and measure humidity.
Most issues are solved outside the house or with a dehumidifier. Some need interior drainage. Either way, we fix the cause first — drywall over a damp wall is a mold project waiting to happen.
Permits aren't optional
Finishing a basement in Mecklenburg County requires building and electrical permits, and usually mechanical. Inspections cover framing, insulation, electrical and final. Unpermitted basements can cause problems at resale and with insurance claims.
Egress for bedrooms
If you want a legal bedroom downstairs, it needs an egress window or door of a minimum size, within reach of the floor, with a proper window well. Cutting one in is a common part of our basement projects.
Then the fun part
With a dry, permitted, safe shell, the design opens up: luxury vinyl plank floors that handle humidity, layered lighting to fight the cave effect, sound insulation under bedrooms, and storage built into the walls.
